Bamboo Towel Sets

Kusala Organics’ Viscose bamboo towel sets are a luxurious addition to your bathroom. There is nothing more luxurious than wrapping yourself in ultimate softness after a shower or bath.

Our range of towels includes washcloths, hand towels, bath towels and bath sheets that are composed of a blend of 70% viscose bamboo and 30% organic cotton. Organic cotton is produced from non-genetically modified seeds and grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. The cotton plantations are certified by organizations such as the National Organic Program within the United States Department of Agriculture.

The viscose bamboo is produced using a “closed loop” technique, which 90 to 95% of all chemicals are recycled through a close loop production process. This results in less environmental waste and makes the working environment safer for employees. This specific viscose bamboo is certified by Oeko-Tex, an internationally recognized standard for organic cloth and textiles. Oeko-Tex ensures that all criteria is met for organic certification and requires regular product evaluation to ensure the company is consistently compliant with organic methods.

Bamboo plants are naturally resilient to pests and do not require fertilizer due to rapid growth. Bamboo is considered the fastest growing woody plant in the world. It is a self-replenishing plant with new shots constantly replacing old shoots, growing approximately 1 meter a day. Bamboo can survive in extreme conditions such as droughts and floods; therefore much less resources and labor are needed to grow bamboo over other plants. Bamboo also releases large quantities of oxygen into the atmosphere, converting much more CO2 to O2 than trees.

The 70% percentage of viscose bamboo in the bamboo towel sets has several advantages over towels that are 100% cotton.

GM Cotton….. Its what’s for Dinner!

Screen Shot 2011 10 07 at 5.04.19 PM GM Cotton….. Its what’s for Dinner!

What comes to mind when you think of Cotton? Jeans, books, diapers, sheets, pillows and towels? Did you know that just about every conventional cotton product we use effects what we eat? The by-products in conventional cotton used in our clothing, personal care, bedding and furniture goes back into our food supply.

GMO Cotton is the 9th largest producing crop and $12 billion industry in the United States. Here in our own US, cotton is mainly grown for fiber. World wide, cotton covers 2.5% of the cultivated land and uses 16% of the world’s pesticides in one single crop; making cotton the “dirtiest” crop production, or in other words may be considered a toxic waste site. Cotton (83%) is one of the top four GMO crops produced in the world which includes soy (89%), canola (75%) and corn (61%).

65% of cotton production ends up in our food chain, whether directly through food oils or indirectly through milk and meats of animals. How you ask? The direct and indirect impact of how this ends up in our food chain is through mostly GMO/BT (Biotechnology and/or Bacillus thuringiensis ) Cotton by-products generated from manufacturing non-food products. The by-products are commonly know as “Gin Trash” which consist of cotton seed, stalk, leaves, burrs, twigs, dirt and everything else that will not be used in the non-food product.

The “Gin Trash” is then sold to food companies to undergo further processing to create Cotton Seed oil, additional additives/fillers in processed foods, live stock feed and soil compost mix. The further processing to create these foods can be extensive and many undergo further cleaning and/or sterilizing to make it “safe”, not to mention the waste that goes back into our water supply.

COTTON: THE NEW FOOD FILLER

“Though cotton isn’t’ a food, cotton oil is produced for human consumption and to produce vitamin E. Cottonseed meal is fed to animals and leftover cellulose fibers that are too short to be spun into textiles are used as food additives. Cellulose, which is basically a plastic, has migrated into numerous foods including cheese, cream, milk powder, flavored milks, ice cream, sherbet, whey products, processed fruits, cooked vegetables, canned beans, pre-cooked pastas, pre-cooked rice products, vinegars, mustards, soups, beer, cider, salads, yeast, seasonings, sweeteners, soybean products, bakery items, breakfast cereals including rolled oats, sports drinks, and dietetic foods as a non-caloric filler.. “Pizza cheese”, a patented food from Leprino Foods, consists of cellulose coated cheese granules combined with silicon to aid in melting. The fact that humans can’t break down or digest cellulose is being used by the food industry to meet the demand for low-calorie, high-fiber foods, Cellulose from cotton fibers is added to a wide range of foods to thicken and stabilize and as fillers to extend serving sizes without increasing calories.

Stories from genetically modified cotton fields in India tell of animals becoming ill or dying from eating the cotton plant and cotton oil cakes and workers in the fields are having skin related itching and eruptions. A new and disturbing skin condition, called Morgellon’s Disease, is thought by some to be related to genetically modified cotton. Though not well understood, it is extremely painful and gives those that suffer from it the feeling of bugs crawling under their skin. In bad cases, a person is covered with intensely itchy sores from which multicolor fibers emerge. Fibers that have been analyzed were found to contain DNA from a fungus and a bacterium which are used in the commercial preparation of genetically modified foods and non-food crops (such as cotton). The fibers are primarily cellulose, which the human body cannot breakdown or manufacture.”  - CalculatedLiving.com/Not Really Food -

With this said, the power in our personal choices to support organic agriculture is crucial. Our first priority is to start with Organic Foods and then onto organic everyday products. Organic regulations/standards follow strict guidelines in the farming process and production to ensure the natural eco-system process.

“Organic refers to the way agricultural products—food and fiber—are grown and processed. Organic food production is based on a system of farming that maintains and replenishes soil fertility without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers. Organic foods are minimally processed without artificial ingredients, preservatives, or irradiation to maintain the integrity of the food.” – OTA: Q&A Organic -

“Aldicarb, cotton’s second best selling insecticide and most acutely poisonous to humans, can kill a man with just one drop absorbed through the skin, yet it is still used in 25 countries and the US, where 16 states have reported it in their groundwater (1).        – OTA: Q&A Organic -

In Bt cotton, the insecticide is always present in the plant rather than applied in periodic spraying sessions which will lead to rapid rates of pest immunities and possibly produce super pests.”

 - OTA : Cotton & Enviornment -

With so many variables involved with GMO crops, no wonder why society’s standard of health is declining. So many various health risks have been linked to GMO foods and products even if we didn’t realize we were ultimately eating what we wear. Cancer, infertility, intestinal/digestive disorders, autoimmune diseases/disorders (allergies), toxic shock syndrome, faulty insulin regulations, and rapid aging have all been associated with GMO. Maybe GMO is the root cause of most of today’s ailments and maybe we should take a closer look at GMO as a factor in our own current health issues.

Many of us would argue that it’s the regulators and companies who need to be looking out for our health. I agree, but the truth is they don’t and it’s up to us to demand better with the power of our own personal choices starting at home. We can play the blame game all day long but all this does is keep us debating instead of empowering.

The next time you’re out shopping for clothes, bedding or personal care, you may want to choose wisely. There are many healthier alternatives to cotton and even if it’s not organic cotton, there are various healthier alternatives that are organically grown to produce the goods you choose to buy.

Wool Solutions for an Eco Friendly and Safer Holiday

FuSheep Wool Solutions for an Eco Friendly and Safer Holidayn Wool ideas for Halloween while supporting healthy local agriculture & social responsible businesses. Did you know wool is hypo allergenic, fire retardant, moisture wicking/repellant, dust mite resistant and soft? I was like most and thought that wool was nothing but scratchy until someone educated me on the difference between processed and unprocessed wool. The chemical processing is what makes wool scratchy but when you get unprocessed wool, it can be extremely soft. After some hands on experience with sheep farming at our local Vashon Island Wolftown, a non profit organization that focuses on wildlife refuge and sustainable agriculture education , I started to think of how versatile and safe wool is. You can do so much with wool and the benefits are extremely rewarding. With Halloween just around the corner, why not help support your local agriculture and make it a safe for your family! Contact a local sheep farm, business or materials store who carry organic/unprocessed wool and start your creativity process. We suggest calling Wolftown (206-463-9113) to get “RAW” carded or uncarded wool. 100% of all the funds from materials and goods sold through Wolftown goes back into the organization. They also offer other avenues of wool products made to order if you are interested.   Wool is a better solution than the typical polyester or conventional cotton materials used. Wool is safer since it’s naturally fire retardant, dust mite resistant and moisture repellant/wicking. This makes it hypo allergenic and helps to support healthy sustainable local agriculture and local socially responsible businesses. Here are a few ideas and maybe you can help to add to this

  • Spider Webs: Whether indoor or out, making spider webs out of wool is your fire proofing and northwest weather resistant solution for decorating.
  • Creatures & Animals
  • Pumpkins
  • Costumes
  • Trick or Treat Bags

Bamboo/Organic Bath Rugs – The Process of Making an Organic Bath Rug

Organic bath rug Bamboo/Organic Bath Rugs The Process of Making an Organic Bath Rug

Organic bath rug

An organic bath rug will have a much smoother texture and feel than those that are made of synthetic material. This blend of 50% bamboo fiber and 50% cotton, both of which are organic, are plush and silky soft. This exquisite texture is due to the standards applied to the creation of synthetic textiles and fabric. While organic products tend to be a bit more expensive than non-organic counterparts, you will see why the extra cost is worth it.

The first part of the organic process is faming of cotton and bamboo. Organic crops are those that do not use fertilizers, pesticides or insecticides to grow. Instead beneficial cover crops are planted between the plants to drive off unwanted bugs or to attract plant pests away from the crop. These cover crops also help to keep the soil well balanced. Bamboo is one of the easier crops to grow organic as it naturally thrives in extreme conditions and is naturally resistant to many pests and insects.

Conventional cotton is another story and organic cotton is worth the trouble. Of all agricultural crops, non-organic cotton uses the most fertilizers and pesticides per acre, than any other crop in the world. Therefore purchasing organic cotton products are promoting healthy agriculture as the reduction of chemicals used in the field are beneficial to the soil, natural ecology and local water sources.

The organic process does not stop in the field but also applies to the manufacturing and packaging of these products. All “chemicals” use to make the fiber are natural and any waste is recycled. This not only benefits the environment but also makes for a safer and healthier work environment for employees. Additionally any packing the organic bath rug comes in is recyclable.

So while you may enjoy the lovely feel of the organic bath rug on your feet as you step out of the shower, as let’s face it no one likes to step directly onto a cold floor, when you purchase organic you are doing so much more.

Viscose Bamboo Organic Comforter Cover

Viscose Bamboo Organic Comforter Cover1 Viscose Bamboo Organic Comforter CoverViscose Bamboo Organic Comforter Cover is the ultimate luxury softness, a gorgeous piece of bedding to fall asleep under. Bedding made of 100% organic bamboo is often compared to silk and there are no words to describe the comfort and relaxation found when sleeping in organic bamboo. You’ll just have to determine it for yourself. Viscose Bamboo has a natural silky texture and no finishing agents are used so it doesn’t loose its natural soft texture. Because no finishing agents are not used, this allows viscose bamboo to keep its natural soft texture, whereas finishing chemicals tend to make fabrics rough and stiff, very uncomfortable against the skin when sleeping. Not only can it be uncomfortable, the finishing agents used in conventional fabric process such as conventional cotton may be an irritant for the skin.

The advantage of sleeping under viscose bamboo cover is the fact that bamboo fabric breathes and naturally wicks away moisture. Those that suffer from night sweats or hot flashes will stay comfortable and cool through the night without uncomfortable wetness. Bamboo comforters are for all season, both cold and warm; a quality that it not found in many other types of bedding.

The colors of bamboo organic comforter cover are vibrant as the colors are made from azo free dyes and feature colors found in nature. The colors are best described as earthy with a range of richness of nature. These colors not only look great but also create a relaxing and warm ambiance that match many bedroom decor designs. Because the dyes are natural and azo free, azo referring to a nitrogen chemical dye, many of which are synthetic, they do not tend to fade. Fading is a problem with other conventional sheets and bedding after frequent washing.

Unlike most products labeled as organic, the 100% organic bedding from Kusala organics are just that, 100% organic. Most products labeled as organic may only contain up to 95% organic blended with synthetic materials finished in toxic chemicals. Only those labeled as 100% are truly organic, you can rest assured the 100% organic bedding offere4d at Kusala Organics is all natural.
